Splitterwerk FrogQueen Architecture

Splitterwerk FrogQueen Architecture: "

The Graz-based design collective SPLITTERWERK was commissioned to design this headquarters building for PRISMA Engineering, a machine and motor technology company also located in Graz(Styria) Austria.

The building form approximates a cube, measuring 18.125 x 18.125 x 17m, wrapped on all four elevations with a pixilated pattern of square panels. From a distance, these panels appear to be painted in a range of ten values of grey tone, together dematerializing the volume of the building against both the trees of the surrounding site and the clouds and sky. Thus the cubic building is at once monumental in its objecthood in the open landscape – scale-less and immaterial – and yet utterly non-iconographic in its overall form.

The lead lensman and photo editor behind the forthcoming book 'Modernist Cuisine: The Art and Science of Cooking,' photographer Ryan Matthew Smith captures food and drink with a keen eye for composition, detail and delectability. In a recent interview with Feature Shoot, Smith discusses the making of the 2,400-page tome and his contribution to making the book renowned chef Ferran AdriĆ  says "will change the way we understand the kitchen.”

From compositing several individual exposures for one enticing cutaway shot of hamburgers on a grill to shooting a lineup of eggs with a 308 sniper rifle at 6200 frames per second, Smith masterfully executed and edited the cookbook's selection of images down from the 1,400 he shot. Smith explains that while he had little studio experience before beginning the project, his extensive portfolio of architecture- and nature-focused photos helped prepare him and that 'having a strong artistic sense towards photography in general can easily transfer through any of the disciplines from advertising all the way to fine art.'

Smith primarily used a Canon 5D Mark II with zoom and macro lenses to create 'minimalist, high contrast imagery that really pops off the page.' The small team of food stylists and cooks were generally led by chef Maxime Bilet, who Smith says 'endlessly contributed cool photo ideas and did excellent styling on the food plating shots,' as well as played an instrumental role in the production and engineering of the cross sectional photos.

Building the sets, shooting (and sometimes reshooting) the food and finally editing the photos was a three year process in total, Smith says. The upshot—a meticulously photographed book that demonstrates the full art form of cooking. "Modernist Cuisine: The Art and Science of Cooking" will sell online starting 14 March 2011.

Honeywell Windtronics Turbine Is Giant Generator

Honeywell Windtronics Turbine Is Giant Generator: "windtronics turbine alternative energy photo

It was hard to find anyone to speak to at Greenbuild about the odd looking Honeywell Windtronics turbine; it was a busy booth. But I got to see it again at the Cottage Life Show in Toronto and it is actually very interesting; instead of the usual design where the blades turn a shaft which is connected to a generator, here the whole thing is a generator, with magnets at the tips of the blade whizzing past stator coils in the ring on the perimeter. ...Read the full story on TreeHugger

Jorge Rodriguez Gerada’s Giant Girl

Jorge Rodriguez Gerada’s Giant Girl: "

Jorge Rodriguez Gerada and the people from the Delta del Ebro region in Spain have joined to form a giant representation of a girl named Gal·la. This installation is meant to bring attention to how future generations will have to pay the price for our inability to act on climate change now.

This piece is one of several major public art installations in over a dozen locations across the planet that will be photographed by satellites 400 miles above the Earth’s surface this November 20-27 as part of a planetary scale art project, 350 EARTH, led by author Bill McKibben and international climate campaign 350.org.
